An invitation to all - 18th January 2009
By R. Whiddett
I was fortunate to travel to Challenge Stadium and watch members; Steven, Nicole, Caitlin, Kristen and Ashlee swim at the recent Swimming WA Invitational Meet.
The five swimmers were thrilling in the pool. Noticable improvement from a coaching perspective resulted in multiple PBs to all swimmers and several medals - an added bonus to the day.
Ashlee swam in 3 events - she finished with 1 PB and a silver medal.
Kristen swam in 4 events - she finished with 1 PB and also a silver medal.
Steven swam just the 1 event and finished a full body length in front to win the 50m Backstroke.
Nicole swam very strong and finished with 2 PBs including one of nearlly 5 seconds.
Caitlin the star of the day with a bad knee came out flying and finished with 1 gold and 2 silvers as well as 3 PBs and 2 AA qualifying times.
Congratulations to all swimmers, your success was very exciting to watch both as your coach and as a spectator.

Spring into Success- 17th October 2009
By R. Whiddett
The Hornets were well represented at a meet that would test every swimmer. Some 14 swimmers entered the Thornlie Spring Carnival, swimming 56 events before travelling accross the road to a well deserved feed at Sizzler afterwards.
After an enpowering huddle that seemed to threaten the clubs that watched on, the Hornets began thrashing times enjoying 26 new personal best times.
Steven Scott represented the club extremely well amassing 3 medals at the conclusion and a very impressive new 50m Freestyle time of 28.62.
The VanDenLangenberg family swam very competitively smashing their times along the way including Jess' 10 sec PB in the 50m Free, 8 sec PB in 50m Back and Matt's 4 sec PB in the 50m Free and 8 sec PB in the 50m Fly.
Luke swam very efficiently amassing an 11 second PB in the 50m Breast. Luke swam some big PBs in other events to in what was a very successful event for Luke.
The Cappeluti's moved closer to qualifying times picking up some well deserved PBs and some good finishes in their heats.
The Buonvecchi family swam well and picked up some good times and would walk away happy with there results.
Ryan swam well, happy with times very close to his PBs.
Ryan, as coach, was very pleased with all the swimmers efforts and said that the club deserved a big congratulations for respresenting the Hornets in such a successful meet.

The Hornets' Sting - 9th July 2009
By R. Whiddett
States wrapped up on Tuesday night after four days of really strong competition leaving many clubs feeling the sting of the Hornets. Our club with little over 12 members were one of the most successful clubs over the four days finishing with 12 top four positions and a count of seven podium finishes. In fact the club ranked 16th from 29 clubs scoring 106 points ahead of close rivals Rockingham 95 and behind Mandurah 129. Our two gold, one silver and four bronze medals were highlights of hard work but for 27 entries we came up with 26 new personal best times nearlly 100%!! A massive congratulations to Austin, Ethan, Lara and Nina who represented the club, well done!! Session summaries follow...
A big congratulations is due after the first session of the HFMF State Open & Junior Championships as three of swimmers took home four PBs and two golds in the morning session. Ethan wrapped up a stunning 50m Fly race to win Gold in a time of 39.48 a near 4 second PB. Nina won a gold in tough competition after placing second against a visitor seeing her take home Gold in 50m Fly in 36.57. Well done to you both. Lara starred in the 100m Breaststroke taking 3 seconds off her time and placing well overall.
Times continued to fall as session 2 wrapped up a very successful 2 medal (2 gold) haul and a day that saw every race finish with a PB. Nina and Ethan swam efficiently in some big finals swims finishing off with PBs bigger then at time 4 seconds.
The morning session was no different as Lara, Nina and Ethan lept up from where they left off on the Saturday night. Times continued to fall as Ethan took 4 seconds then 2 seconds of his 100m Back and 50m Free respectively. The icing on his morning cake a Bronze state medal in the 100m Back. Lara and Nina's PB hopes in their only race were successful Nina finishing 8th in the 50m Free with a 1.4 second PB and Lara finishing with a 0.9 second PB.
Session 4 continued a so far successful meet with Ethan placing 9th in his 50m Breaststroke taking 1 second off of his time. Lara was up next and placed her best result ever at states with a 4th and a 2 second PB - a massive effort. Nina wrapped up the younger swimmers meet with a 6th in the 100m Fly and an unheard of 6 second PB and 9th in the IM with a 2 second PB.
Session 5 saw Austin the sole competitor for Kwinana picking up some massive PBs and 2 bronze medals. His first come up in the 100m Breaststroke which saw him take a massive unheard of 7 seconds off his time. His second coming not much later with a 1 and a half second PB. Congratulations Austin and the best of luck to you for tomorrow's racing.
Session 6 wrapped up a successful day for Austin. He placed really well in each of his events and missed the podium by a fingernail in a couple. It all started when he placed 5th with a 1 and a half second PB in the 50m Back. 4th set a trend for close finishes with a 4 second PB in the 100m Free and he finished missing out on a Bronze by the slimmest of margins with a 3 and a half second PB in the 100m IM.
Session 7 this morning is one I was lucky to watch. Austin performed really strong in the 100m Back finishing with a 3 second PB, a strong 5th. What followed was special as this is right an 11 year old made it under the 30 second mark (challenges for me and Steven). Austin swam in the first of two heats swimming the 10th slowest but after a 3 second PB and a very strong preformance Austin found the podium for a Bronze not expected given the seeding.
Session 8 wrapped up this incredible campaign. Austin performed well in the 50m Breast placing silver in a 39.03. His time wiped off after the 100m Fly with a 3 second PB and a 5th place.
Again congratulations to everyone you have shown great character through your swimming, well done!!

Swimming WA Junior Champs - 4th April 2009
By R. Whiddett
On March 21 and March 22 six of Kwinana's individual state representatives headed to Challenge Stadium to challenege the state in the Swimming WA Junior Champs. THis trip proved very successful as together the club managed 22 new personal bests from 37 entries a marvellous effort. As coach I was very impressed by the effort that each swimmer put in. From warming up to marshalling tot eh final race the whole effort was exceptional. The seven swimmers (six individual, one relay); Lara Buonvecchi, Nina Buonvecchi, Sophie Buonvecchi, Luke Hooper, Austin McAleese, Ethan McAleese and Caitlin Cappelutil swam at their peak and their time stood no chance, WELL DONE!!

Virtual Rotto Swim = a big success - 22nd February 2009
By R. Whiddett
On January 21 whilst many were still tucked up in bed ten weary swimmers made way to Kwinana Recquatic. For what you ask - the Virtual Rotto Swim. Our team of four; Kelsey, Austin, Nina and Zalman successfully finished the 20km first. The Happy Hornets finished in a time of 6 hours, 3 minutes, and 51 seconds.
Just over an hour later our team of five; Tony, John, Annaleise, Sebastian and Lara completed the journey. WALLY - W.eary A.rms L.egs L.imbs Y.es finished in a time of 7 hours, 16 minutes, and 47 seconds.
Forty minutes later our solo swimmer; Ryan painfully finished. After finding that survival strokes were the best thing to do after freestyle was no longer an option Ryan crossed the line in 7 hours, 54 minutes and 12 seconds.
This massive journey was a challenge for all involved and everyone deserves a massive congratulations for their magnificant efforts.
Results available from our meet results page, thank you!!
