September 2009 - Shadah Orfinejad

I am twelve years old and have lived in Perth since I was three. I started swimming squads last year because of my asthma problem and decided to join swimming club after there had been a big improvement in my swimming, running and other types of  athletics. Everyone at swimming club is really friendly and I have met a lot of nice people there I have also made new friends.

So far I haven’t competed in many swimming competitions  I look forward to doing more. The highlights of doing  swimming squads and  s/club so far would be getting a bronze medal in interschool year six girls  and coming first in the 50m Breast Stroke earlier on this year. My favourite stroke would have to be breast stroke and least favourite would be butterfly.

When I  get older and go to university I would like to study veterinary science and become a vet and work in Nina's zoo with Lara! =D

I have eight homing pigeons with more on the way 3 finches and a dog called Peter that I have had since I was five years old.

I go to north Parmelia primary school and I am a student councillor. I am looking forward to the year 6 camp in November and I am sure it will be a lot of fun. I used to play netball for Kwinana until the little kids took over!!! But I still play for my schools netball team as GA(goal attack), GD(goal defence) & C(centre).

See You  Later!

August 2009 - Fraser Wipp

I started swimming when I was 5. We went to Spain from England for a holiday and went to a swimming pool nearby so the lifeguard taught me how to swim! When we got back, I started swimming in the local sports centre were I won many, many badges for achievements i.e.: Swimming 500 Metres. When I was 8 I started swimming lessons at school and just before I moved to Australia I competed in the Interschool Gala were I won two 1st place medals and one 2nd place medal. That was 11th of July 2008.

So now I swim for Kwinana Hornets!

I also won a 50 metres breastroke event at the shell novice meet at Rockingham and won a Bronze medal at the Region 3 qualifying meet which I am very proud of myself for.

When I grow up I want to get a degree in English so one day I could become an Author. If I don't become an author I want to be a swimming teacher in my spare time and also swim for States/Australia if I make it. My main goal at the moment is getting up to states times so I can win more events and maybe even get a medal or trophy.

I have a dog called Daisy who is very playful but can be really, really lazy! So that's why we call her lazy Daisy! Thanks to all my friends and family who support me as well.

Bye!

April 2009 - Annaleise Gaffney

Hi I am Annaleise,

I am 10 years old and am in grade 5. I started swimming lessons when I was 11 weeks old. My mum and dad decided I should learn how to swim as they don't really know how. As I got older they continued the swimming lessons to help with my asthma. I enjoy being in the water so much that no matter what time of the year if we are on holiday my bathers always get packed. When I passed levle 13 swim class we spoke to the teacher about swim lessons versus swim club. She recommended that I try the swim club for a few years.

So I joined the Kwinana Hornets swim team about 1 year ago and since then I have gotten a lot better at swimming than I ever thought I would be able to. I really enjoy Tuesday nights as I get to give things a go and sometimes surprise myself doing better times than I thought I could. I only do colour pennant comps because I also dance 5 hours a week and do little athletics. At first I only wanted to be in my age group but after the first one was so much fun I didn't mind going up to the higher age groups to help the club out.

Last year I was asked if I would be interested in being in a group that going to do the Virtual Rottnest Island Swim. So on February 22nd this year mum and I got up really early and drove to the Recquatic Centre, we arrived there about 6:20am. There were 5 in my group and we all had a good time. Everybody was cheering and encouraging everyone else. I have already told my mum and dad if I get asked to do it again that I would love to do it, it was an awesome experience. I think all the people I have met and become friends with at the Hornets have made it more fun for me.

Last year at my school swim carnival I was equal champion girl with my friend Caitlin Cappeluti. I was very surprised and so proud of myself to have achieved that at my first ever school swim carnival. My mum and dad were there and cheered me on all the way. Next week we are having our swim school carnival again and I am looking forward to it.

December 2008 - Olivia Bouwman

I’ve just completed TEE at Kolbe Catholic College and hope to achieve a sufficient  TER to study at university to become a primary school teacher.

I am 17 years old and  started swimming with Kwinana Swimming Club at the age of 9. I swam for one season only and won champion for 9 year old girls.

After this the outdoor pools were closed and my family moved up north to Tom Price. It was there that my sisters and I started to enter competitions and gained some PBs. After 16 months we moved again to Karratha. We swam for 2 hours after school each night and every second Friday were our time trials sessions. In Karratha we became more competitive and swam competitions that could last for the whole weekend and raced up to 17 events; like The North West opens and the Pilbra Championships to name a couple.

Moving back to Mundijong so I could start year 10, both my sisters and I joined Kwinana Swimming Club. My times aren’t excellent, but the friendly atmosphere makes swimming enjoyable. The people are great and I hope to continue at Kwinana Swimming club for many seasons to come.S

October 2008 - Caitlin Cappeluti

My name is Caitlin, I am nine years old and I started swimming with the Kwinana Hornets at the beginning of 2007. My favurite stroke is freestyle. I love going to swimming carnivals to achieve my pbs (personal bests). So far my favourite swimming meet was Geraldton. My goal ahead is to be a better swimmer. I have done a lot of swimming carnivals and have achieved a lot of pbs. A few weeks ago my mum and dad took Kristen and the twins and I to the swim meet in Mandurah. Kristen did two events; 50m Backstroke and 50m Breaststroke. I did five events; 50m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Butterfly and 100m IM (Individual Medley). I done four pbs out of the five swims. Butterfly was the best swim beating it by approximately ten seconds and finishing fifth out of twelve in my age group.

I am a year four at St Vincent Primary School. My teachers name is Mr Da Silva and Mrs Denham. I love playing sports and have done three years of athletics. My best friends are Caitlyn, Annaleise and Tia. We have been together since pre primary.

September 2008 - Zalman Hardy

In 2005, when I started swimming, I thought it was going to be very, very hard, challenging and boring. I suppose I was just lazy at the time, however now I think swimming is great fun and not that hard at all (besides the 1500!).

I think our club is excellent for team-manship (Is that a word?), and we can be very competitive and strong when we want to be, resulting in a "Force to be reckoned with".

A bit about myself, well, I listen to AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Nirvana and basically any other type of rock or metal music, I like reading books, especially fantasy and adventure novels and I like watching horror movies with lots of gore and an interesting storyline.

I support Fremantle Dockers, which, to quote Sebby, are also "not doing very well this season" (Sebby should support a better team anyway). I have a huge family, containing, 4 brothers and 5 sisters, as well as 18 neices and nephews and of course a mum, grandma, dog, cat and various birds, cousins, aunties etc.

I started swimming for my fitness, as I have pretty bad Scoliosis and I used to have bad asthma. Swimming has helped me to overcome my asthma, as well as making me fitter and healthier in general.

My favourite stroke is Breaststroke, as I find it to be a slow, relaxing stroke, which really helps in the middle of an IM.

My goals in swimming are:

  • To acheive at least one state time
  • To get some more medals from diffrent strokes (I've only got a couple now, all from Breaststroke) and
  • to get some club records.

I'm currently attending Rockingham senior High School, and I hope to pass TEE, enter Murdoch University, and ultimatly become a Nanotechnologist or Engineer.

Anyway, i've "Blah blahed" enough for now, so CYA!

August 2008 - Sebastian Buonvecchi

Hi my name is Sebby Buonvecchi. I’ve been swimming for 1 year. My favourite stroke is breaststroke and my favourite sport, football.  I have been to States for breastroke but no other stroke. Butterfly is my worst stroke; I’m pretty good at backstroke and missed out on States by 1.72 seconds. I wasn’t very happy but I was happy about me going to States for breaststroke. I have 3 sisters who also swim for the club as well as 2 cousins.

I also like to play football and the club I play for is Safety Bay Stingers and I’m in the under 12s. I’ve been playing since I was 6 years old. My favourite position is wing which is on the side in the middle. I like that position because you have to do a lot of running. The AFL team I support is the West Coast Eagles, who are not doing very well this season.

Some of my other sporting achievements have been coming 3rd in the school cross country, and coming 17th in the inter school, getting into the school footy team, school basketball team, coming runner up champion boy in the school swimming and getting into inter school swimming as well. Playing cricket when I was 6 or 7 and also being a part of my school’s soccer program are some extra sporting achievements.

I am currently in year 7 at Star of the Sea Primary School, Rockingham. Next year I go to Christian Brothers College, Fremantle. My favourite food is stir fry, my favourite song is Elevator by Flo Rida, my favourite artist is Flo Rida, my favourite sportsperson is Daniel Kerr who plays football for the West Coast Eagles and my favourite car is Lamborghini Gallardo. The person I would most like to meet would be Daniel Kerr.

July 2008 - Kelsey Jones

Hi, My Name is Kelsey and at 13 I am currently the longest serving female swimmer at the Kwinana “Hornets” Swimming Club, I have been at the club for 5 years.

I started swimming way back when I was about 18 months old, I jumped into the old Rockingham pool chasing my older brother and after that I basically have been in the water doing lessons or competing ever since.

I started swimming with the Rockingham club when I was 5 and swam my first competition when I was 6, I swam with Rockingham for another year or so and I had to give up for a little while because I broke both my wrists for a total 3 times in just over 2 years, My left wrist once my right wrist twice.

I decided to join the Kwinana Swimming club after my older sister said she was joining. So when I decided to join I have not stopped swimming ever since.

I do not favour any one stroke but I am getting a lot of improvement in the Backstroke and the odd breaststroke events but in the last couple of weekends have had dramatic improvements in the freestyle and the butterfly, but I like all strokes.

I am especially starting to like the distance events and I really enjoy the IM’s I think they actually make you work at your strokes.

I have started to achieve a few medals in the last couple of months and have achieved medals at the Shell novice finals for sprinting Ha Ha! (Me sprinting) Earlier in the year I competed in my first open water swim at city beach amongst the waves and jelly fish it was hard work but for the pain I won a Bronze medal.

I have also competed at the Cockburn Jetty to Jetty were we sent 3 swimmers out of 600 competitors all 3 of us Ryan, Jordan and myself finished in the top 80 a great achievement!

I have got a few friends at the club and at other clubs and always enjoy the competition because you get to chat with them.

Just like my sisters at Mandurah the other Jones family that left the club, you tend to mix well with the swimmers around you and it is great to be a club member at these meets.

Just remember that winning medals is not the challenge you set yourself breaking your PB’s are, Medals are the bonus at the end.

June 2008 - Austin McAleese

I started doing swimming lessons when I was six months old. That was in Canada where I was born. We moved to Australia when I was 3 years old. I actually had my 3rd birthday on the plane trip over here. I kept on doing swimming lessons and when I was 8 I told Mum and Dad that I really wanted to try racing. So I joined the Kwinana Swimming Club when I was 8. My favourite stroke is Breaststroke, but it's not my fastest - probably freestyle is. The best thing about swimming is racing. I love doing that. I also like the friends I've made in the club.

Here's a joke for you.

Q; What race is never run?

A; A swimming race.
